Celebrating Women Empowerment: The Inspiring Journey of Maimouna

In the heart of AlQatroun, a municipality in southern Libya, Maimouna shines as a symbol of hope and empowerment for women in her community. With a strong educational background and an unwavering commitment to social service, she embodies the essence of uplifting and inspiring others.

Maimouna’s journey began at the Teacher Training Institute, where her passion for education blossomed. Then she pursued a bachelor’s degree in Islamic studies. Her professional path flourished as she joined the AlQatroun Education Monitoring Department, taking on leadership roles as the manager of the Kindergarten Office and later as the Director of the School Activities Office.

In 2015, Maimouna co-founded the Al-Wedad NGO, an organization dedicated to empowering women and children in her community. Despite facing funding challenges, the NGO focused on raising awareness about critical issues such as health, social justice, and political engagement. One of Maimouna’s proudest achievements was leading an awareness campaign on high blood pressure in collaboration with the Libyan Heart Association and the Red Crescent. This initiative not only improved community health but also showcased Maimouna’s dedication to creating positive change.

Through her work with Al-Wedad, Maimouna gained invaluable experience in health advocacy and education, eventually becoming the Head of the Breast Cancer Awareness Team in Libya. Her commitment to community service led her to engage with ODP, where she applied to become a community mobilizer. In her role with the EQUAL project, Maimouna focused on raising awareness about the rights to access basic services for both adults and children, helping to enhance the community’s understanding of these essential rights.

Maimouna reflects, “Working with ODP has given me a better understanding of how my community members think, which helps me find ways to support them and create meaningful change.”

Her impact extends beyond mobilization; Maimouna has become a key contact for activities within AlQatroun and surrounding areas, providing vital support and guidance to the ODP team. She has also played an essential role in navigating local bureaucracy, securing necessary approvals from the municipality to facilitate community projects.

Additionally, Maimouna volunteers with the High National Elections Commission as an awareness ambassador assigned to the Ubari region, promoting the importance of electoral participation.

Maimouna serves as an inspiration to countless women, embodying the spirit of empowerment and civic engagement. She encourages others to embrace their roles as change-makers, reminding us all that every effort, no matter how small, contributes to a brighter future for our communities.

As we celebrate Women Empowerment Month, Maimouna’s story stands out as a powerful testament to the impact one empowered woman can have. Her journey inspires women everywhere to rise, engage, and make a difference, reinforcing the belief that together, we can create a more equitable and vibrant society.
